Derrick Rose took a major stand on Saturday night and joined the masses in support of Eric Garner by wearing a “I Can’t Breathe” shirt during warmups prior to the Chicago Bulls game against the Golden State Warriors.
Thousands across the country have joined in protesting the decision by a grand jury in Staten Island, New York not to indict police officer Daniel Pantoleo in the choking death of Eric Garner.
Garner spoke those infamous last words, “I can’t breathe” as Pantoleo held him in a a chokehold and other officers helped bring him to the ground and restrained him.
Rose is usually one of the quieter players in the league but obviously felt this case was worthy of him taking a stand.
The T-shirt is the extent of Rose’s message for now as he wasn’t available for reporters postgame. Joakim Noah said Rose told him he planned to wear the shirt but didn’t elaborate on his reasons.
“He has every right to express his beliefs,” Noah said. “I respect Derrick 150 percent. He’s definitely making a statement. And that’s my guy.”
Rose often does things for the community such as donations and more but does them in a quiet manner.
