Back in January when the Los Angeles Lakers were facing the Boston Celtics, Kobe Bryant was asked how would Rajon Rondo handle the rebuild in Boston. Bryant replied, “From what I understand he’s an asshole like me, so he’ll manage.” Rondo was flattered by Bryant’s comment. “That’s a great compliment coming from Kobe,” Rondo said. “I feel the same way about him.” On Friday night the two teams faced off again but this time the two stars met beforehand and their assholeness came together.
While people were speculating that the two were forging a future power duo, Rondo had this so say.
“He called me an a**hole, and I thought of the same thing of him,” Rondo said according to a Tweet from ESPN’s Baxter Holmes. “Just two a**holes having breakfast.”
So what did Kobe have to say?
via Mark Medina of the Los Angeles Daily News:
Bryant joked that he and Rondo had a “mutual intervention” surrounding their respective team struggles. In reality, Bryant reported having a “basketball geek conversation” that entailed revisiting the Lakers and Celtics trading NBA titles in 2008 and 2010.
Bryant showed off his sarcasm involving the issue on whether he would like Rondo to join the Lakers once he becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer.
“I’ve never thought about having any future teammates before,” Bryant said, wryly.
Lakers fans can still dream. They’re in desperate need a point guard and Rondo would fit perfectly since he has spectacular court vision and racks up assists like no other. Surely he’d be the type of teammate that Kobe needs. Rondo has also been in trade talks for the past two years and is nearing the end of his current contract with his dismal, “rebuilding” team. Sounds like a match made in heaven right? Well, we’ll just have to wait and see.
