Last night, Lifetime aired their rendition of Aaliyah’s life. In their movie “Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B” check out the details inside.
Why would they do that?
Those are the exact words I thought after watching this terrible movie.
Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B which starred Alexandra Shipp as Aaliyah was in my opinion not a success and from the look of twitter and fb feeds around the net I was not the only one to feel this way.
The family of R&B Singer Aaliyah publicly rejected this Lifetime movie as well as denying Lifetime any legal rights to Aaliyahs music and I can’t blame them. Lifetime must have felt that the show must go on..so they decided to still throw it on television (literally). Not a good idea.
The movies storyline and script was sourced from Christopher John Farleys 2001 biography “Aaliyah: More Than A Woman”, depicting Aaliyah in a way which seemed to confuse the audience. You could’nt tell who’s perspective this movie was supposed to be from. We know for a fact it was not her family (the ones closest to her) since they had no parts of this “film”. The main reason why I described it as being unauthentic. Immature in the sense of Aaliyah is portrayed as a teen or
Although the movie did highlight much of Aaliyahs success and work ethic. This was not enough to capture the attenton of the audience. If you are going to do a bio-pic please indulge me on something I can’t find on wikipedia. The main component which was missing was Aaliyahs personal life. The story tried to capture her family life as best as they could under the circumstances, but again it was not enough.
When Zendaya was dropped from depicting Aaliyah and a new actress was quickly highered to replace her we should have knew something was up.
Being someone who grew up in the Aaliyah era I was lost while watching the movie and that is sad. Surprisingly (not really) Wendy Williams was the executive producer of this Lifetime bio-pic. I say not really because she definitely promoted the movie heavy. What I didn’t understand was how she could be a radio personality during Aaliyahs prime and think that was a television worthy depiction.
None of the actors resembled any of the roles they were playing “Damon Dash” looked more like Will Smith for God’s sake. I can go on and on but I digress please watch this for yourself (Or dont). AND if you did see the movie please let me know your thoughts.
In my opinion the memes mocking the Lifetime Feature were actually more entertaining then the actual movie. Did you guys see those? We have pics for you so don’t worry!
(FYI what really irritated me were the commercials advertising more of these type of movies premiering on Lifetime -_- Please stop. I understand February is coming up but lets take a pause on the “African American Movie” Depictions. Trust me I am not looking forward to watch Lifetime depict En Vogue or the Voice aka Whitney Houston smh.)
I don’ know why they did this!
