Boris Diaw is known for loving food and gaining quite a bit of weight. Diaw however joined the San Antonio Spurs and became a critical part of the championship team. San Antonio also managed to keep him in shape. So how did they do that? Well this incentive surely didn’t hurt.
via ESPN’s Amin Elhassan:
• Most importantly, Diaw’s deal features $500,000 in annual performance bonuses in the form of a weight clause. Each season, he gets:
• $150,000 for weighing less than or equal to 254 pounds on Oct. 25
• $150,000 for weighing less than or equal to 254 pounds on the first Tuesday after the All-Star Game
• $200,000 for weighing less than or equal to 254 pounds on April 1
Players often have performance-based bonuses in their contracts but this the first I’ve heard of this kind and I have to admit it made me laugh.
