It’s no secret that the Houston Rockets have been trying to form their own “Big 3” with James Harden, Dwight Howard and a third star. They unsuccessfully tried to go after Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James and Chris Bosh, while losing Chandler Parsons in the process after not deeming him Big 3 quality. Now they have a new target in sight and will have major help from someone already on their team.
Kevin Durant will become a free agent in 2016 but many teams have already set their sights on the super star. Amongst them are the New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets and the Washington Wizards in Durant’s hometown. According to Marc Stein of ESPN, the Rockets will join in on the hunt as well and will use Durant’s former teammate, James Harden to help bring him in.
The Rockets are widely expected to take a step back this season, thanks to all the depth they squandered on the Bosh dice roll, but they expect to have significant salary-cap room next summer — when they can chase point guards as accomplished as Goran Dragic and Rajon Rondo if they choose — as well as in the summer of 2016.
Which is when, sources say, they’d like to give Harden an opportunity to serve as Houston’s lead recruiter in the pursuit of a free agent named Kevin Wayne Durant.
