Last month at a media event for UFC 178 Jones and Cormier broke out into a brawl and had to be separated by security. It appears that the brawl led to more implications than Jones bargained for, who recently revealed that the brawl was one of the factors that led to Nike dropping their endorsement of him.
Via Complex Sports:
while it appeared as though the fight was exactly what the UFC would have wanted to happen—it helped them get a ton of publicity for UFC 178—the Nevada Athletic Commission just decided to punish Jones for his role in it. They fined him $50,000 and told him that he will be required to do 40 hours of community service in Las Vegas because of the brawl.
And unfortunately for Jones, that’s not all. In addition to those punishments, the UFC fighter also just revealed that he lost his Nike sponsorship a short time after the fight with Cormier took place and missed out on the chance to sign a six-figure deal with another potential sponsor. So all in all, his brawl with Cormier hurt him immensely.
“I made us all look bad,” he said earlier today during a hearing, “and as a champion, it was a terrible thing.”
