A bombshell was dropped earlier today when ESPN reported that Rajon Rondo requested a trade from the Boston Celtics. As you would imagine, there are several teams lined up for the services of the star point guard, but who has the best chance of landing him?
The four teams mentioned so far vying for Rondo are, the Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks.
The Rockets gave up a lot of assets to clear cap room this season and the Mavericks may not have the picks and young talent it could require to deal for Rondo, which is why they’ve been all but ruled out.
The Knicks don’t have the assets to make a deal like that and the players the Celtics would probably ask the Lakers for (power forward Julius Randle, the seventh-overall pick in this year’s draft) may be too much for the Lakers, especially with the risk Rondo could walk at the end of next season.
The Sacramento Kings could make a substantial offer for Rondo but he has already made it clear that he would never re-sign with the team.
So ummm, back to the drawing board…
