Shots fired! A war has flared up between Mayor Bill de Blasio and a top police union called the Sergeants Benevolent Association. The president of the union, Ed Mullins, called on Democrats to reject the mayor’s‘s bid to move the 2016 Democratic National Convention to Brooklyn. Mullins referenced the increase in shootings, talks of delayed contracts, and that cops are under the impression that City Hall won’t back them up, as reasons to not hold the event at the Barclays Center.
Mullins says, “We have a police department that’s got low morale, that’s constantly being scrutinized, second-guessed,” He told WCBS 880’s Rich Lamb, “And every convention that occurs is always followed with protesters, to which the police will have to respond, and we will be the subject of lawsuits, discipline, videotapes. And how do we put our members of the NYPD through this?” Mullins questioned if the mayor genuinely felt as though people were more concerned with politics over the quality and protection of life.
Ed Mullins continues by saying, “It is no time for ambitious local politicians and political ‘wannabes’ who ignore public safety to bask in the spotlight of a national event made possible by the sweat and hard work of law enforcement, only to throw the city’s police officers under the bus.”
Ouch! Mayor Blasio, what do you have to say for yourself?
The mayor fired back with, “If any union wants to strengthen their economic position, do it based on the fact. Don’t try and stoke fear in the city we love.”
“If terrorists could not keep us from hosting big events, then nothing should, especially not a select few who object to the change of direction from the winds of positive and progressive change that have blown through this city,” Adams said.
Earlier this month, the mayor faced criticism for inviting the Rev. Al Sharpton to City Hall for a meeting that with NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton subsequent to the death of Eric Garner.
The question is, what will this feud do to the mayor’s reputation if he keeps going back and forth with the NYPD?
