The Cleveland Browns quarterback race is finally over and they’ve made their decision, Brian Hoyer will start.
via NFL:
The team on Wednesday announced that veteran Brian Hoyer will start at quarterback Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, per Vic Carucci of the team’s official website.
“He was the clear leader from the beginning,” coach Mike Pettine said in a press release. “We’ve maintained all along that if it was close, I would prefer to go with the more experienced player. Brian has done a great job in the meeting rooms and with his teammates on the practice field and in the locker room.”
The decision leaves first-round rookie Johnny Manziel staring up from the No. 2 spot on the depth chart after both passers struggled through Cleveland’s first two preseason games.
Manziel also said recently in an interview that he was not ready to start against the Pittsburgh Steelers in week one. Manziel also set people off by throwing up the middle finger at the Washington Redskins during their Monday Night Football game.
Of course Hoyer is just named the starter for NOW, things can change. If he struggles, there’s no doubt fans will be screaming for Johnny Football to take over and the Browns are likely to oblige.
