The Lakers took quite some time to officially hire Byron Scott even though he was reportedly the leading candidate all this time. Well he is the guy that Kobe Bryant wanted but there were some issues.
Scott and the Lakers were having problems coming to an agreement on how many years would be in his contract. The Lakers didn’t want to be tied to him long term because they are trying to figure out who their next star will be and want a system that will work with that player. It might not be a system Scott can coach. The Lakers wanted a two-year deal (when Kobe’s contract is up), Scott wanted a four-year commitment. He got his wish, sort’ve.
via ESPN:
The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to terms on a four-year, $17 million contract with Byron Scott to be their next head coach, sources told ESPN. The Lakers hold a team option on the final year of the deal.
Still doesn’t mean they won’t fire him after two, or just decline the final year of his deal since they hold a team option, but for now everyone is happy.
