A transgender patient at a Connecticut psychiatric center, identified as Jane Doe, was transferred to a boy Juvenile Training School after a violent outburst Saturday night. Find out the whole story after the jump!
The Department of Children and Families said Sunday that “Doe” was accused of assault during her stay at the Children’s Psychiatric Center in Middletown after she attacked another youth and a staff member, while destroying property in the process Saturday night.
Claiming that there is no “suitable place” for the young girl, she was moved the nearby Juvenile Training School for delinquent boys. Prior to being in the psychiatric center the girl was being held in a women’s prison without criminal charges.
While she is said to be in a single room separated from all of the other residents, the girl’s lawyer is still quite upset at how the Commissioner, Joette Katz, went about the move. Instead of notifying the girl’s representation, Katz simply just issued a news release.
“I am shocked and disappointed at the commissioner,” he said. “I question whether the commissioner should continue to be in her position if she believes in this litigation in the press.”
The girl’s lawyer Aaron Romano claims that the DCF broke promises to get therapy for his client and seek foster care. Meanwhile the DCF said she was too violent for them to handle and asked a state judge to transfer her to a Department of Correction, which the judge approved in April.
