Third grade students at Mill Plain Elementary School in Washington are being forced to pay to go to the bathroom.
The students reportedly earn monopoly money when they behave well. With the use of monopoly money, students are responsible for deciding whether or not they should utilize their “spending money” on snacks, toys, or the restroom during class. The children’s spending of money on treats, left them without enough money for restroom visits, causing them to have accidents in class. What 9 year old do you know would deny themselves the enjoyment of a treat or toy? The problem lies in the teacher’s decision in denying the students access to the bathroom. According to the school District spokeswoman,” the district allowed the “pay-to-potty” program because it was the teacher’s classroom management strategy. Students are given bathroom breaks several times during the day but that individual teachers decide how to handle restroom breaks during class time”. Unfortunately, because of this “pay potty system”, Jasmine Al-Ayadhi’s child had to pay the price when her daughter when she were pants.” “I didn’t want to be left out and I wanted to have popcorn with the rest of my friends said her daughter. “It hurt so bad, she said ‘Mommy, I couldn’t hold it.” Since the release of this story, the school district has decided to investigate the issue. The teacher has been removed from the classroom for the duration of the investigation.
