The New York Knicks last ditch effort to make it to the NBA Playoffs was officially crushed Friday night when the Atlanta Hawks defeated the Miami Heat 98-85.
With no draft picks and no cap space basically all the Knicks had left to fight for was a playoff spot and that dream was killed. Now they must move to the next phase hoping new president of basketball operations, Phil Jackson can work a miracle and fix the shamble of a team.
The first objective of course is to try and re-sign soon-to-be free agent Carmelo Anthony. This by the way is the first time Anthony will miss the playoffs in his career. Now with an ailing shoulder, a team that realistically can’t make any big moves until 2015, he’s faced with a big decision. With the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers lurking in the distance, his decision won’t be an easy one.
In addition to the Anthony situation the Knicks will also have to deal with the head coach position. Woodson has spent basically the entire season in the hot seat and it’s all but guaranteed that he will be fired. Steve Kerr has been mentioned as his possible successor but it remains to be seen if he can handle the job.
Lots of questions going forward for this turbulent team.
