Tonight, the ‘Rock & Roll’ Hall Of Fame induction ceremony will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and though it encompasses all genres, the name itself is kind of pigeonholing and lends itself to criticism about certain inductees not actually being of the rock and roll genre. Hot 97’s own Miss Info wrote a piece for the NY Times, and presented quite the valid argument as to why perhaps a name change would be suitable after almost 30 years.
Fans lucky enough to have tickets to tonight’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Barclays Center may be digging out their vintage tour t-shirts and breaking out the face paint, but they don’t necessarily see themselves as the ground keepers of a musical genre. They’re just looking for the “Monsters of Rock” awards, Band-Aid without the guilt trip, a diorama of their glory days.
Meanwhile, the Hall that Rock and Roll built has to figure out if it’s going to be a temple or a mausoleum. It purports to be the former, all glory be to the gods of guitars and drums. And every year, there are critics who feel the invitations haven’t been inclusive enough, or purists who say the inner sanctum has been compromised.
