Honor student, Rachel Canning, a then senior heading to college, decided to sue her parents for financial support and college tuition. After their refusal, the teen has made amends and reunited with her family back home. Check out the full news clip below.
Canning had placed the suit upon her parents when they kicked her out of the house, leaving her without shelter or a way to financially support herself at the moment.
The lawsuit asked that Canning’s parents pay the:
“remaining tuition for her last semester at her private high school, pay her current living and transportation expenses, commit to paying her college tuition and reimburse her friend’s parents for legal fees”
A judge denied the teens tuition payment request, and current living expenses; they are also waiting for a later arraignment in April. Canning’s parent’s have stated that although an honor roll student, the teen had been suspended from school for truancy, disobeyed her parents by leaving her home and had an ongoing conflict with her parents because of an alleged boyfriend.
“This is a matter that should have been brought into some counselor’s office, not into a courtroom,” Angelo Sarno, the defense lawyer for Canning’s parents, stated. “We just ask that you respect their wishes and give them some chance to resolve it.”
