Just 6 weeks till the 2014 Olympics are set to take place in February, a suicide bomber struck a Volgograd railway station in Russia. The suicide bomber allegedly set the bomb off when she was near a metal detector and became anxious after officials started to gain on her suspect activity. A police sergeant “rushed to check her I.D”, seconds after he was killed by the explosives, leaving other officers wounded as well.

“When the suicide bomber saw a policeman near a metal detector, she became nervous and set off her explosive device,” Vladimir Markin, the spokesman for the nation’s top investigative agency, said in a statement. He added that the bomb contained about 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of TNT and was rigged with shrapnel. HP

The bombing brings in the concern on whether Russia will be able to live up to their promise, vowing to make this year’s olympics “the safest Olympics in History”. Although Russia has experienced spurts of suicide bombings, The Volgograd region is not one usually targeted for forms of protest or rebellion;

“… many have been contained to the Caucasus, the center of an insurgency seeking an Islamist state in the region. Until recently Volgograd was not a typical target, but the city formerly known as Stalingrad has now been struck twice in two months — suggesting militants may be using the transportation hub as a renewed way of showing their reach outside their restive region”
