On Saturday night Marcos Maidana took on the undefeated and heavily favored Adrien Broner in a fight for the WBA Welterweight championship. Everyone was hoping for a good fight and got more than they bargained for, including Broner.
Maidana struck early and strong, throwing powerful combinations and knocking down Broner in the first round. Broner struggled to regain his footing as Maidana continued to attack with Broner up against the ropes. Maidana landed 57 punches in the opening two rounds to only 13 for Broner, according to Showtime.
Broner regained his footing and spent the next few rounds trading punches with Maidana but Marco was sending and landing much more.
In the eighth round Maidana knocked Broner to floor once again and continued a barrage of punches as he tried to get a knockout. Broner wrapped up Maidana in an attempt to slow him down and regain the upperhand, Maidana then headbutted Broner as he tried to break free. Broner clearly tried to oversell the headbutt as he tried to regain his strength but the referee decided to deduct Maidana one-point for the infraction.
The match was an exciting and grueling one as the two slugged it out for all 12 rounds. Maidana won by a unanimous decision with the judges scoring 115-110, 116-109 and 117-109 in his favor.
Broner known for his bravado, crazy acts and what many consider to be overly cocky had finally been stunned as he suffered his first defeat. For those waiting for Broner to finally be “humble” though, don’t hold your breath.
“I’m OK. I’m still the three-time world champion in three different weight classes,” Broner said. “Tonight, Maidana was just the better man, but we fought a hell of a fight. I hope the fans got what they deserved. … I’m still going to live like we won the fight. I’m still going to party.”
Broner also says he’s wants a rematch. I’m sure viewers do as well.
