Thousands of cases reported on an Arizona child abuse hotline have not been investigated since 2009 according to state officials. It is still unknown if these children are in harm’s way. SMH. Clarence Carter, the head of Arizona’s child welfare system, states that there are 6,000 cases of child abuse that need to be investigated. At least 125 tips have been reviewed, in which children have became victims of another child abuse investigation. SMH. If the hotline was being handled properly, maybe future cases could have been avoided?! Arizona’s Child Protective Services has been one of Gov. Jan Brewer’s main priorities. It makes me wonder how important this department was to Brewer if abuse tips were not being investigated for nearly 4 years. This is what Carter had to say about Brewer’s reaction:
“I will say that some of that might not be printable. Her response was significant. It was – I have never seen my boss, the combination of anger and sadness, in the time I’ve been in this position. The idea that there are 6,000 cases where we don’t know whether or not children are safe, that’s cause for grave alarm.”
This alarming discovery comes after police contacted child welfare in regards to the status of a report and they were informed it was “not investigated.” This launched a review of all status reports.
