As one student decided to support LGBT month by wearing a rainbow flag for two weeks, two other students decided to make a statement of their own and wore confederate shirts, hit the jump for more detail!
Tahoma Highschool in Maple Valley, Washington has students filled with diverse opinions as a reported case of anti-gay sentiment amongst two students sparked over a a LGBT supporter publicly displaying his pride, a week prior.
The town is reportedly known for having residents support and openly display confederate flags on clothing, trucks and more, yet the flag is banned from being displayed in the high school. One of the students opened up about wearing the controversial flag as a shirt and admitted to doing it in “retaliation” to the other student “flaunting” his LGBT values.
“It’s just a way of showing our Southern pride, nothing racist at all,” Grady told the news station. “If he can wear his flag in support of what he believes, we figured we could do that as well.”
The student is defending his case as a freedom of speech issue, he and his partner in crime are suspended till Monday for dress code violations and causing a disturbance.
What do you guys think? Should the two have gotten suspended? Are there points valid? Or is this inexcusable and a good call by school heads?
