New African American Dolls

Move over Barbie, there’s a new doll in town! Natural Girls United, a California based company, is now introducing a much needed change in the toy industry! After noticing a lack of reflective images in barbies for African American girls, Karen Byrd started customizing dolls. Byrd explained on her website,

“There have been quite a few studies done that show that African American boys and girls often think of black dolls as bad and white dolls as good. Of course, this is not something that the parent is teaching their child. So why are they getting these mixed messages about good and bad skin color, or good and bad hair? It all has to do with the images they see as they grow up.”

Natural Girls United offers a variety of African American dolls in different skin shades and hair textures on their site. All of Byrd’s dolls are equally beautiful, so it might be hard just to pick one. I’m glad that a woman would dedicate her time and money in a business venture that would uplift so many minority children.

“All little girls deserve to be told they’re beautiful” – Marilyn Monroe.
