With fans of the NFL still in shock that the Browns traded Trent Richardson to the Colts in the middle of the season, now a new story about the Browns has come out. When they traded Richardson this week, it has many believing that they have already given up on this season after starting 0-2. They still had a decent chance to be competitive, but when you trade your best offensive player that becomes pretty hard to do. Former GM Mike Holmgren ripped the team for making a trade like that. He also said things could be completely different right now if the Colts had taken his crazy offer before they drafted Andrew Luck last year. Hit the jump for more.

Holmgren, speaking during a radio interview said that he offered Colts president Brian Grigson ALL of the Browns picks in the 2012 draft if they would give the Browns the #1 overall pick that they owned. Everyone knew Luck was going to be taken #1 and the Browns needed a QB. They had 11 picks in that draft. “I talked to Grigson before we made the trade and said I’ll give you all of our draft picks for the No. 1 pick and I’ll take Luck,” Holgrem said. “I’ll give the whole draft to you.”
Did Holmgren think he would be taken seriously? It doesn’t sound like it.
“We were at the pool and he was having one of those little drinks with an umbrella in it, so I thought I could take advantage of him,” Holmgren joked. “I said, ‘Brian, let’s just do the deal. Right here, right now.’ I probably offered it knowing he wouldn’t take it.”
That would of been a record deal giving up that many picks just for one. But in hindsight the Colts did the right thing by declining that offer and picking Luck. Now their entire franchise has been able to survive A.P. ( After Peyton), thanks in part to the play of Luck.
