The Jets just a short time ago announced Mark Sanchez will be placed on the Injured Reserve list. What that means for those who don’t know is Sanchez will not be allowed to come back until at least week 11. Short term that pretty much means the quarterback job belongs to rookie Geno Smith without having to look over his shoulder. Long term however, it could be huge for everyone involved. Hit the jump.

With the Jets placing Sanchez on IR, it pretty much ends his season. Technically he can return week 11, but by then it really would not make sense to try and insert him into the lineup if Geno Smith has been playing all season. Now this move can have a huge effect on Geno, Sanchez, the coaching staff and the team.

If you are Geno Smith, even though you never want to see someone get hurt, you have to be happy knowing that each week you won’t have to deal with a possible quarterback controversy. He can just go out and play and learn more each week without that stress. If you are Mark Sanchez, they pretty much signals the end of your time with the Jets. The only way he would play when he comes off the IR list, is if Geno has played so incredibly bad that they have no choice to take him out. I guess I am one of the few people who still believes Sanchez is a starting QB in this league. I would of started him over Geno going into the first game. Geno played solid his first game against Tampa, but his rookie mistakes against the Patriots killed any chance the Jets had to win. Those rookie mistakes are why I would of named Sanchez the starter early so there would of been no controversy. But Rex Ryan seems to love having a circus atmosphere around the team. Smith might wind up playing very solid later in the season, but early on I would of went with Sanchez.

Now, Ryan and the coaching staff are also on the hot seat. If Geno does not perform well and the Jets have another terrible season, there is no question Rex will be fired. So he is putting alot of his future with the team in the hands of a rookie QB. As for Sanchez, he needs to pretty much start having his agent discuss options with other teams once the season ends. He needs to make sure he gets his shoulder healthy and I personally think he will be a starter somewhere else in the future. The move to put him on IR in my opinion was basically made to kill any weekly controversy between the quarterbacks and really let the team move forward with Geno. Good luck to everyone. Remember, this is the Jets we are talking about.
