A Florida teen took her life Monday after months of suspected cyber bullying from class mates, hit the jump for more details
Officials in Florida are currently investigating several classmates after the death of 12 year old Rebecca Ann Sedwick. The teenager took to a tower located in an abandoned cement building Monday and leaped towards her tragic death. The young girl had transferred schools in efforts to get away from old taunting classmates; yet she was unable to find refuge in her new school, where she received the same negative treatment. The teen reportedly only spoke with one other male friend before she took her life, to which he told no one.
“There may have been only two or three of them who participated in the bullying,” said sheriff spokeswoman Donna Wood. She added that any filing of criminal charges in the case could still take some time.
“We have to determine if a crime has been committed. We have cyber-stalking laws and cyberbullying laws. It really depends on how the case goes,” Wood said
Sheriff Grady Judd said earlier that investigators found messages on social media addressed to Rebecca stating, “You should die,” and “Why don’t you go kill yourself.” Speaking to reporters on Thursday, he said Sedwick was despondent and “beat down” after receiving the hate-filled messages and “absolutely terrorized.”
The problems between Rebecca and her former classmates began in 2012 over a “boyfriend issue,” according to Judd.
This is a tragic death that reflects the importance of listening when others may feel distressed, as well as standing up for others who are being taunted before it’s too late, truly sad.
