Mark Sanchez deep down I am sure is hating his coach Rex Ryan right now. The quarterback competition was already up in the air, but with the shoulder injury Sanchez sustained against the Giants last week, it has opened the door for Smith to be named starter week 1 against the Bucs. Sanchez is listed as day-to-day, but most people in the organization think it will be a few weeks before he can play. Hit the jump for more.

Rex Ryan said it would be wrong to assume Sanchez, adding “until there is an announcement, the competition will go on”. This was billed as a “fair and open” competition, but even though Sanchez outplayed Smith in the preseason, Ryan still doesn’t feel comfortable in naming a starter. He wants to leave wiggle room, knowing he probably will open the season with Smith. If the rookie plays well, Ryan can leave him in the lineup without having to break a commitment to Sanchez. This basically sounds like the competition could last all season, with both guys getting chances to play or start. However if smith starts the season and plays well, that could be all she wrote for Sanchez with the Jets. Smith better be ready to start week 1, because preseason games made him look pretty average, if that.
