After the attack upon two young photo journalist interns, who believed that they had been sent to an abandoned building on a magazine assignment in Mumbai, the female rape survivor is speaking out.

She stated from her hospital bed:

“Rape is not the end of life,” the young woman told the Press Trust of India, adding that she hopes to return to work as soon as she can” “I want the strictest punishment for all the accused and want to join duty as early as possible,” she said”

The young journalist and her fellow male colleague had ben lured in by a group of men outside of the abandoned building who insisted that they knew the entrance of the building. The 5 men trapped them into the deserted mill, tied them up with belts, and beat them. Tragically the men also gang raped the young female journalist.

After the incident many took to Mumbai to protest the gang rape and attack, by covering their mouths with black cloth. Nationally, many have stated their negative opinions of the actions of those who committed this atrocity as well as their confusion on why these actions are taking place.

“It is appalling that a young woman working in the heart of Mumbai was attacked in this manner,” said Bob Dietz, Asia program coordinator for the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, according to the AP.

This attack occurred: “mere months after a 23-year-old student died after being brutally gang-raped on a bus in New Delhi, the horrific incident has reignited protests and debate over the lack of women’s safety in India”.

“[Mumbai] has this sense of security … but these things make us feel that maybe we are not really that safe,” said A. L. Sharada, director of Population First, a Mumbai-based non-proft that works on women’s rights issues, according to Reuters. “Women should be able to move freely and take up work. Why should we be worrying about something bad happening to us all the time?”

Three suspects are currently detained, investigators are still searching for the other two. One detained, includes a 19 year old boy, around the same age of his victims.
