It got real at Riker’s Island, but what else is new? This time, it’s on tape. Recently, an intense fight broke out in the infamous prison that involved about 50 inmates and went on for hours. And get this, it was all over a grilled cheese sandwich! Members of a Dominican gang –the Trinitarians– apparently got into it with members of the Crips after they didn’t allow them to use a hot plate to cook. Hit the jump and check it out. The prisoners were seen on camera hitting each other with a variety of things from mop sticks to chairs. And, of course, it wouldn’t be a prison fight without shanks. Around 11 inmates were slashed.
The correction department is now looking into the situation. They are curious as to why the fight went on for so long. Department spokeswoman, Eldin Villafane said [that] “While the housing unit was fully staffed – and a considerable number of staff and supervisors on post in the jail and on Riker’s Island responded – there is every indication that this situation could have been handled differently and that this incident went on far too long.”
