Trayvon Martin’s mother added her opinion on the stop and frisk controversy on Meet The press, Hit the jump for more detail!
Sabrina Fulton, the mother of slain teenager Trayvon Martin decided to voice her opinion on the Stop and Frisk Law. She notioned that the law gave police authorities the wrong “direction”.
She stated on NBC’s Meet The Press yesterday:
“You can’t give people the authority, where it’s a civilian or police officers, the right to stop somebody just because of the color of their skin”,
Although many are in approval of the courts decision in New York City that the stop and frisk law is unconstitutional “because it disproportionately targets blacks and Hispanics”, others are accrediting the law to the city’s “decrease in violent crimes”.
New York City Police Commisioner Ray Kelly stated:
“What we’re doing – and what we’re trying to do — is save lives, Things are going right here in New York. And this decision certainly has the potential of overturning it”.
The stop and frisk law has been the result of over 5 million stops within the last decade in NYC, targeting mostly Black and Hispanics. At least 200,000 stops were made without reasoning. The class-action law suit is one of the biggest legal actions against the policy that the city has yet to see.
Benjamin Jealous, president of the NAACP, stated on Meet the Press:
“There are now more stop and frisks of young black men in New York City than there are young black men in New York City,” causing for tensions and gaps to increase amongst police officials and minorities due to what he considers to be racial profiling.
What do you guys think of the Stop and Frisk Law? Now that it the policy has been abolished in NYC will crime increase, or will there be more peace and less tension?
