On Friday, divers discovered three sailors whose bodies were severely burned. The men aboard the submarine were trapped after two explosions in the torpedo compartment rocked the Russian-made submarine, INS Sindhurakshak. There were 15 other sailors on the submarine at the time of the explosion, and a navy spokesman said that it’s doubtful that the men are alive.
Commenting on the explosion the navy spokesman, Narendra Vispute said, “The bodies are severely disfigured and not identifiable due to severe burns. DNA tests would be used to identify the bodies. However, the navy will continue to search every inch of the submarine until no bodies remain to be found.”
No contact has been made by any of the sailors since the explosion, and it is unclear why the explosion started. The submarine was semi-submerged when the explosion took place; sending fireballs through the air at Mumbai’s naval dock.
