The Tri Delta Sorority and the Alpha Delta Fraternity of Dartmouth turned too many heads when they decided to throw a “Bloods and Crips” themed party. The NAACP now accuses these mostly white greek communities of being racist. They wrote in a letter, “Our peers mingled for hours while dressed as bloods or Crips while using racialized language…it’s then turned into a ‘ghetto party’ with racialized language, speech and dress. Over 200 individuals attended this racist and classist event.” The Alpha Delta fraternity issued an apology that said, “The idea was never meant to be derogatory to any group, and was intended to introduce a costume theme to the party…we now realize that it was insensitive and thoughtless to make light of a very serious issue.” And the sorority apologized by saying they will “continue to educate our members regarding cultural sensitivity and awareness.” Next time they should probably stick to more common costume themes!
