A study from the University of South Carolina revealed that more than four cups of coffee a day can increase your risk of dying young. As per the study, ‘young’ is anyone under 55. The study comes from the tracking of 43,727 people whose ages ranged from 20-87. From the study, it’s now believed that the excessive consumption of coffee may adversely affect the body’s metabolism, outweighing some of the known health benefits. Around 2,500 deaths were recorded during the study –which lasted 16 years, and about a third of them were related to heart and artery disease.

According to researcher Steven Blair, “Recent research has shown that coffee is a major dietary source of antioxidant, and it may reduce inflammation and boost brain function. At the same time, coffee stimulates the release of adrenaline, inhibits insulin activity, increases blood pressure, and raises levels of homocysteine, a harmful chemical linked to heart disease and dementia.”

Despite his findings, other coffee researchers feel that his study’s limitations may skew the results. What’s unanimous is that coffee consumption is healthy when consumed in moderate amounts.
