A mob of Buddhists attacked a Sri Lankan Mosque, Hit the jump for more details!
At least 12 people including 2 officers, are reported to be injured in a series of attacks against the Muslim minority community, by “members of the buddhist majority”. issues began when buddhist members began throwing rocks into the three story mosque during evening prayers on Saturday.
Hundreds os Muslims flooded the streets soon after, in order to protect their community and prevent further attacks from the mob, reported witnesses. Police imposed a curfew till Sunday in hopes that tensions settle down.
The mosque was built just a month ago after Buddhists forced the closing of another mosque in the area. In Sri Lanka Buddhists are thought to make up about 70% of the population while Muslims make up about 9% of Sri Lanka’s 20.3 million population.
“Targeting any place of worship should never be permitted and we urge calm from all sides. We call for prosecution of perpetrators in this attack and an end to religious-based violence,” the embassy said in a statement.
