As smartphones and tablets saturate the market, tech companies are realizing there’s still one screen that remains largely unconquered – the television. While Microsoft is in this space with Xbox, it’s far from dominant, and set-top boxes from Google and Apple are trying to work their way into the living room. Never one to be behind the curve, Amazon is trying to step their game up and get the ball rolling on their own game console/media center. More details follow after the jump.
The new media center/game console is now circulating in the rumor mill and, if reports are correct, will arrive by the end of the year. It will be powered by a Qualcomm processor that’s common in in smart TVs and other set-top boxes, which corroborates reports that while the device will be capable of playing video games, gaming will not be the emphasis. Of course, Amazon has a huge interest in getting in the living room to push their music, movie and television store and streaming services. With all of these innovators trying to get onto our TVs, now is a great time to be a TV fan.
