Hood River County Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Tiffany Peterson said a rescue crew found the body of Collin Backowski, 25, under eight to 10 feet of snow and ice this morning, KATU reported.
Backowski, of Pines, Colo., had been missing since an ice tunnel collapsed Saturday afternoon. Five of his companions, all in their 20s, were uninjured and called for help. They tried to dig Backowski out, but weren’t able to break through the thick snow and ice.
A dozen people had been using chainsaws and other tools to clear snow and ice since early Sunday morning.
Backowski and his friends had been scouting for places to take videos and pictures on the White River Glacier, KGW TV reported. Then, around 4 p.m. Saturday, a large piece of ice — about the size of a school bus — came crashing down as Backowski was walking about 30 to 40 feet ahead of the rest of the group.
