IFWT_10-A-Night

Just $10 a night would have you living in the Sun Bright Hotel –less than ten minutes from SoHo. But would you really want to? Since 1988, the hotel has been slapped with 46 summonses and as of today, it still has 22 open violations. Hit the jump for more grimey details.

The occupancy per floor that are legally permitted is 83 people per floor, however a reporter from the New York Post discovered 125 on both the third and fourth floors. But overcrowding is the least of the tenants’ worries, the hotel hosts more vermin than a Chinatown dumpster. In fact, that’s pretty much what this place is. It would be more suitable for one to pay to live in prison.

The hotel has been in operation since the 19th century. Each tenant –usually male– live side by side in very small rooms, 7 by 5 feet, less than the average 8 by 10 feet available in a solitary confinement cell. Aside from the tenants, the hotel also hosts roaches, bedbugs, fleas and rats complemented by hallways that reek of sweat, urine, and rotting trash.

Just when you thought that it couldn’t be any worse, tenant, 74-year-old David Rodriguez, reported that ““Somebody died on the other side, and he was there about 15 days. The management never cleaned the room after the body was removed. They left it dirty. It smelled very bad — a dead man!”

Upon further investigation, reporters noticed that the room, No. 159, still belongs to the dead man because his personal items were never tossed and his bed was never even cleaned.

According to the New York Post, in June, the building was sold for $14.8 million to Bowery 88 LLC, which shares its address and suite number with the headquarters of clothing retailer Dr. Jays.
