Homeless shelters receiving aid can no longer discriminate against LGBT youth whom appear to them looking for shelter is a new law in congress is passed. The law which is introduced by an openly gay member of the U.S House, Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis), as well as Rep. Gwen Moore, this past Thursday. Pecan stated that the passing of the law is “moral responsibility”, giving assurance that the community will have a safe place to stay. He further expressed his feelings towards the dangers of homeless LGBT youth:
“Homelessness is one of the most pressing matters affecting LGBT youth,” Pocan said. “Young people in the LGBT community are disproportionately at-risk for homelessness, often as a result of the rejection, discrimination, or violence they face simply for being themselves.”
The Runaway and Homeless Youth Act is hoped to be passed alongside the Reconnecting Homeless Youth Act. If passed the bill would prohibit the discrimination of LGBT youth in homeless shelters, receiving cereal funded aid, also providing “resources to support the families of those having difficulty with the sexual orientation or gender identity of their children”.
