Residents in South Africa have the disadvantage of dealing with wild baboons. Unfortunately for the victims of the baboons’ acts of theft, the baboons can sense when a person is afraid of them or if they act in fear. When they sense fear, they infer that they rank higher in the “food chain.” Check out what this means for the residents after the jump.

Residents of the cape peninsula are in a very compromising situation. Since 1999, baboons have been protected by law from being killed. This has caused residents to find alternative ways to deter the animals from breaking into their homes and stealing their food.

Due to the constant increase of people moving into cities, the baboons have decided that it is less risky for them to just steal food from either residents or trashcans. The cunning animals have even come to understand the schedules of diners and the times that they discard their trash, in which they would hunt. Since, in their natural habitats, they are not at the top of the food chain, and since they are protected by law, the beasts are able to thrive off of the locals by stealing food. However, many are fed up.

Many baboons crawl up the sides of apartments in search of open windows. Once found, they ravage apartments and take whatever they see fit; including stuffed animals, blankets, and drapes. It’s straight out of a movie.
