In 2009 yacht owners Jean and Scott Adam of Marina del Rey, Calif., and their friends, Bob Riggle and Phyllis Macay of Seattle, had embarked on their journey amongst the coast of Africa when they were “taken hostage at sea”. The yacht owners were taken hostage by 19 Somalian Pirates, whom’s intentions were to bring them to Somalia in hopes to gain ransom money.

The plan soon began to backfire when the U.S Navy began “shadowing” the Quest yacht, that had been dangerously taken over. The U.S had also stationed in Somalia, where the “negotiations” were taking place”. The U.S authorities had negotiated the yacht that they had stolen in return for the victims, yet the pirates refused. They believed that “that wasn’t enough”. When the pirates had reached the Somalian Coast line they were rushed by U.S Navy Seal and authorities. The four victims were found “mortally wounded” upon entering the yacht.

Although the attorneys of Ahmed Muse Salad, Abukar Osman Beyle and Shani Nurani Shiekh Abrar, argued that they had committed the acts due to their mental “disabilities”. The lack of empathy and attitudes shown towards their victims, allowed for the jury to determine that they believed he was not mentally disable and deserved the death penalty. Is justice being served in this case of the Pirates?
