I am surprised Nike took this long. Nike announced today they have ended their relationship with Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun. When he accepted his 65 game suspension for using PED’s, you knew all his endorsements were going to leave just like his fans did. Nike does not play when it comes to their reputation as a company. KeJuan Wilkins, a spokesman for the world’s largest shoe and apparel maker, acknowledged Friday that the company no longer has a relationship with Braun. He has worn Nike apparel ever since his rookie season in the big leagues. He virtually has no endorsements still remaining, not any that matter anyway. Nike brings the big $$ for athletes, so this was a big loss for him. Braun had been wearing Nike shoes and batting gloves for his entire seven-year major league career, and the company recently began selling “Big Bat Like Braun” and “Braun Owns Milwaukee” T-shirts in stores.
One thing he can hold on to is, if he can get back in baseball next year and show he is a changed man and do the right things, Nike may very well pick him back up, the same way they did Michael Vick.
