The tragic stories of being racially profiled in America are endless. While Trayvon Martin is a focus right now, and should be, we can’t forget the others who are have the same scenario played out for them. Jordan Davis, another 17 year-old Florida resident, was listening to loud hip hop music in his car, when a man nearby in a separate car, Michael Dunn, told his girlfriend that he hated “thug music” at the convenience station that they both happened to be at the same time.
Michael’s girlfriend got out of the car to go into the convenience store, and she heard gunshots while still inside. When she came back, she found Michael putting his gun back into the glove compartment, and admitted he had felt threatened by the man in the car playing music and shot at it. They left but discovered later than Jordan Davis had died that night. Because of the Stand Your Ground laws, it is likely that Dunn will walk the same way Zimmerman did. The system is screwed; this case got no attention due to Trayvon Martin, and it is certainly as worthy. These laws need to repealed; we cannot send the message to our children that their lives can be taken because of these laws. Give some attention to the fallen heroes of everyday life who fade into the scene of racial profiling and injustice.
