If you know anything about sports, you know the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry is real! Opposing fans hate each other, and it makes for great drama, especially when both teams are good. But rivalries like this can also have some negative aspects to it. Fans can quickly become “fanatics” when there is alcohol involved, like in this case here. A Red Sox fan won a huge lawsuit against a restaurant in Connecticut after being stabbed in the neck by a Yankees fan a few years ago. Read more after the jump.

Monte Freire, 45, suffered life-altering injuries, including a brain injury, a stroke, impaired speech and vision and severe scarring as a result from the stabbing. He was awarded $4.3 million by a jury this week. The Yankees fan, John Mayor, was convicted of assault and is serving a 10-year prison sentence. The lawsuit stems from Mayor being drunk at the restaurant that day and bartenders ignoring it and continuing to serve him. Witnesses say they ignored many warnings from customers that Mayor kept trying to pick fights with people. The attack was completely unprovoked witnesses said. They told police back then that Mayor labeled Freire and his friends Red Sox fans based on their accent and started to verbally assault them. Then out of nowhere he stabbed Freire in the neck before people jumped on him. The lawsuit accused the restaurant, the U.S.S. Chowder Pot III, in Branford, CT of being negligent in continuing to serve Mayor and ignoring warning signs. I am happy to hear Freire won the lawsuit, but I am sure he would much rather have his health back to normal instead of money.
