Details continue to come in regarding the tragic car accident involving former NBA all-star Mookie Blaylock. Physically the worst seems to have passed, as his condition was upgraded again in the hospital after he had surgery on his ankle. But emotionally things may be just getting started as there is a chance he will be charged with vehicular manslaughter as a result of the accident that left Monica Murphy dead. She could not overcome the injuries she suffered when Blaylock’s SUV hit the van she was riding in with her husband head on. Turns out Mookie was not even supposed to be driving any vehicle period. According to USA Today
Jonesboro, GA police chief Franklin Allen told USA TODAY Sports there will be a discussion next week with the district attorney over charges for Blaylock, 46, who apparently lost control of his Cadillac Escalade, crossed the center median and collided head-on with the vehicle driven by Murphy’s husband, Frankie, who broke an ankle. Allen said he believed Monica Murphy died from internal bleeding.
Allen also said there was an outstanding warrant in Spalding County for Blaylock for failure to appear on a DUI and drug charge. There were no indications alcohol or a high rate of speed was a factor in the accident. Allen said Blaylock previously had been under a doctor’s care for seizures. Blaylock also is in line to face charges for driving on a suspended license and failure to maintain control of the vehicle, Allen said.
Blaylock did have a seizure recently as paramedics were called to his home. Police are still not sure if that is what led to him losing control of his Escalade. But the fact he has a suspended license, which means he was not supposed to be driving to begin with might really come back to bite him in this case down the road. Again our prayers go out to the victim Monica Murphy and her husband and family.
