Brittney Griner was drafted No. 1 overall by the Phoenix Mercury this year, she also did one of her first major interviews by announcing she was gay to Sports Illustrated. The revelation was one she wasn’t allowed to announce during her time at Baylor.
According to CBS Sports:
Brittney Griner said she was told by Bears coach Kim Mulkey to keep her sexuality quiet while at school.
Mulkey wanted to keep the players’ sexual orientations out of the public light because she thought it would hinder recruiting and negatively portray the program.
“It was a recruiting thing,” Griner said in an interview with ESPN The Magazine. “The coaches thought that if it seemed like they condoned it, people wouldn’t let their kids come play for Baylor.”
Griner admitted she only recently came out because of Mulkey’s request.
“It was more of an unwritten law [to not discuss your sexuality] … it was just kind of, like, one of those things, you know, just don’t do it,” Griner said. “They kind of tried to make it like, ‘Why put your business out on the street like that?’ ”
“I told coach when she was recruiting me. I was like, ‘I’m gay. I hope that’s not a problem,’ and she told me it wasn’t.”
