Many people assumed the Oklahoma City Thunder would face the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals again this year but after they traded James Harden and Russell Westbrook suffered a season ending injury, they didn’t even make it to the Western Conference Finals. Of course some changes will have to be made during the offseason and many have speculated that Kendrick Perkins will be one them but that might not be the case. Read more after the jump.
In my opinion one of the mistakes the Thunder made was giving Perkins a four-year, $34.8 million contract extension. Not only were the Thunder unable to keep James Harden, Perkins hasn’t played up to anything worth that much. Perkins averaged 2.2 points and 3.7 rebounds per game in the playoffs. He also failed to defend the Memphis Grizzlies bigs who dominated during their playoff series and elimination of the Thunder. Many think the Thunder should amnesty Perkins but apparently that won’t happen.
From OKC Thunder beat writer Darnell Mayberry:
Also Perkins showed confidence in an interview recently saying, “I’m pretty comfortable and I’m pretty sure I’ll be back here next year,” Perkins said. “They said they were going to amnesty me last year or trade me last year, but whatever. I know what I bring to the table, and I’m cool with myself. I’m going to go to sleep tonight.”
