Tamerlan Tsarnaeav died after a stand-off with police on April 19, four days after he and his brother set off bombs at the Boston Marathon. Tsarnaev was shot by police multiple times before they had them in custody. Once in police custody, his brother Dzhokhar ran him over with an SUV dragging him about 20 feet. Tamerlan was taken to the hospital unconscious where he later died. The cause of death was known within days of his death, but was not released until the body was released to his family. Tamerlan’s death certificate cites blunt trauma to his head and torso and gunshot wounds as the cause of death. The certificate also states that he had “gunshot wounds of torso and extremities.”
