IFWT_Mark Sanchez

The Jets circus act continued last night when they picked up West Viginia quarterback Geno Smith in the second round of the NFL draft.  The addition brought the Jets number of quarterbacks to the magic number of six but one big name could possibly get the boot.  Read more after the jump.

Geno Smith added to the roster joined Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, David Garrard, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms.  While it was assumed that the others would fight for their roster spot many thought Sanchez was safe due to the huge cap hit the Jets would take upon releasing him.  Sanchez would count for $12.353 million ($12.853 million if he gets his workout bonus) and $4.8 million in 2014.  Well according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter they might be finally willing to take that charge.

According to ProFootballTalk:

Nick Sanchez, Mark’s brother who serves as his agent, told Sal Paolantonio of ESPN that the Jets were talking to Sanchez all day because they wanted him to know that another quarterback could be coming. But what the Jets haven’t told Sanchez is whether they want him to take a pay cut, whether they will try to trade him, or whether they might cut him despite still owing him $8.5 million guaranteed this season.

When Paolantonio asked Nick Sanchez if his brother/client wants to stay with the Jets, Nick answered, “I haven’t asked him that question yet. He will comment at a later time.”

Jets coach Rex Ryan has said that Mark Sanchez will take the first snap of the Jets’ first practice, and that anything after that will be a matter of competition at the position. But now it’s fair to wonder if Sanchez will even be there to take that first snap.

Also shocking, after all the talk of cutting or trying to trade Tim Tebow, if they do cut Sanchez there’s a chance they’ll now try to keep Tebow.  You never know with the Jets front office.
