Former LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu made major headlines after failing several drug tests and being kicked out of school. That same issue caused his draft stock to drop substantially before he was finally chosen by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round (69th overall). The pick however came with conditions. Read more after the jump.
Mathieu joins fellow former LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson in the Valley of the Sun. Many projected the player nicknamed the “Honey Badger” to go in the third round, and those predictions were proven true Friday night, despite his off-field issues.
Part of the reason the Cardinals may have chosen to take a chance on Mathieu is because he said he told the team that he’ll submit to drug tests “whenever they want to,” and will put such language into his contract. He also will meet with other mental health professionals to demonstrate his commitment to football.
According to Chris Mortensen, Mathieu agreed to take “weekly” tests to prove he’s staying clean. It shows real growth with Mathieu hopefully he’s able to make the best of this opportunity and continue on the right path.
