Mark Sanchez and his contract are affecting the Jets like the black plague. They can’t cut him, trade him or even include him in a deal with top cornerback Darrelle Revis. Read more after the jump.
The Jets signed Mark Sanchez to a three-year contract extension that includes a $8.25 million base salary for next season. Sanchez went on to throw more interceptions than touchdowns last year (18 INT’s to 13 TD’s), so of course he’s a difficult piece to move. The Jets can’t cut him because the cap hit would be far too great so what’s the next possible tactic? Try to include in a him trade that would send star cornerback Darrelle Revis to the Tampa Bay Bucs. But not so fast Jets, the Bucs don’t want those problems either.
According to ProFootballTalk:
Multiple reports have since emerged that the Buccaneers aren’t interested in Sanchez. Several of the reports have confirmed, however, that his name did indeed come up as a potential add-on to the deal.
If the Bucs would take Sanchez, it wouldn’t mean they necessarily want him. It would mean that they want Revis badly enough to remove from the Jets the obligation to pay Sanchez $8.25 million guaranteed — and to carry the cap space that is consumed along with it.
Apparently, Tampa’s desire to land Darrelle Revis has a limit.
It looks like the Jets will have to live their mistake of giving Sanchez that extension and have no choice but add pieces that can possibly help him.
