Just when you thought the San Francisco 49ers couldn’t get any better, they made a big offseason splash. They acquired Super Bowl winning wide receiver Anquan Boldin from the Baltimore Ravens and added him to their pistol offense of Vernon Davis, Frank Gore, Michael Crabtree and young multi-talented quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Their defense was already pretty good, ranked 3rd overall but everyone knows they need a new cornerback. Many speculated they would make a run and trade for Pro Bowl CB Darrelle Revis from the Jets but that has died down. Instead they are contenders for Nnamdi Asomugha who was a hot commodity in free agency two years ago but was released from the Philadelphia Eagles after failing to produce. Read more after the jump.
Though Asomugha is making visits to the New Orleans Saints, the San Francisco 49ers remain a serious contender to land the cornerback.
According to ProFootballTalk:
In the case of cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, the fact that he’ll be visiting the Saints doesn’t remove the 49ers from the category of serious contenders for his services. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Asomugha has simply decided to take other visits as the process of picking a new team plays out.
In addition to the Saints and 49ers, the Cardinals, Texans and Broncos have also shown interest. The market for cornerbacks is soft this year with many settling and some taking one-year deals in order to try again next year. Former Dolphins CB Sean Smith received the most, getting a $6 million per year from the Chiefs. Asomugha already has $4 million from the Eagles which could prompt teams to try to convince him to take less in the first year of a multi-year deal.
