IFWT Carmelo jersey retired

With his wife Lala and son by his side, Carmelo Anthony had his Syracuse jersey retired during a special halftime ceremony during their game against Georgetown.  Read more after the jump.

In a sellout crowd of 35,012, the largest to see a college basketball game in an on-campus arena, they watched as a large replica of Carmelo’s jersey was unveiled hanging from the rafters.  His jersey joins the likes of Dave Bing, Vic Hanson, Pearl Washington, Sherman Douglas, Wilmeth Sidat-Singh, Derrick Coleman, Rony Seikaly, Billy Owens and Billy Gabor to be honored.

In his freshman year at Syracuse, Carmelo led the Orange to the 2003 NCAA Championship and forever immortalizing himself in the school’s history.

Anthony described getting his jersey retired as “one of the most memorable days of my life, my career.’’

“I know everybody in college basketball says they have the best fans,’’ Anthony said. “But there’s no fans like Syracuse fans.’’
