JaMarcus Russell didn’t have many all-pro receivers to throw to during his three ill-fated seasons in Oakland, which is one of the many, many reasons his career went up in flames. However, receiving talent won’t be an issue at Russell’s April 10 pro day because he’ll be throwing passes to Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, according to the Palm Beach Post.
The Post points out that Fitzgerald may have been encouraged by Cardinals teammates Early Doucet and Patrick Peterson to participate in Russell’s pro day. Both Doucet and Peterson attended LSU.
The April 10 date for Russell’s pro day is a tentative one that Russell and his team are aiming for as the former No. 1 overall pick works to get back into playing shape.
Russell has been working with former NFL quarterback Jeff Garcia at the TEST Academy in San Diego and has shown some improvement during his workouts. Russell reportedly weighed north of 320 pounds in the fall, but has since dropped down to 300 pounds, according to the Palm Beach Post. Russell’s target weight is 265 pounds.
Despite weighing-in at 300 pounds, Russell was still able to run a 5.2 second 40-yard dash during a recent workout. That time is only .36 seconds off of his 2007 combine time of 4.84 seconds.
Besides Fitzgerald, the Palm Beach Post also reports that former Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Michael Clayton is expected to take part in Russell’s pro day.
